BMW AND MINI DEALERS ARE NOW SUPPORTING 100 LONDON 2012 HOPEFULS IN THE RUN UP TO THE 2012 GAMES.

As part of its role as Official Automotive Partner of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, BMW and its national network of BMW and MINI dealers have been getting behind British athletes as they attempt to qualify for Team GB or ParalympicsGB. Now, the number of athletes being supported at a local level has reached 100 and is still growing.

The 2012 Games is the biggest sporting event in living memory and is a way of generating excitement within local communities, giving people the opportunity to get involved, and providing valuable support for the athletes.

Regionally, as well as driving a brand new BMW or MINI until the end of the Games, the dealer-sponsored athletes have been attending events at the dealerships, chatting to customers about their training and even allowing staff members to get involved in their training sessions!

Nationally, the BMW Group is backing 27 athletes throughout their preparation for the Games. The BMW London 2012 Performance Team represents a wide variety of sports and includes Olympic and Paralympic gold medal winners: Rebecca Adlington, Tom Daley, Tim Brabants, Mark Hunter, Bradley Wiggins and Ellie Simmonds, among others.

Together, the BMW London 2012 Performance Team and the local athletes are showing great promise ahead of next year’s Games and have already been mentioned in several ‘ones to watch’ articles. In the Guardian’s ‘London 2012: Britain’s 50 best medal hopes’ article (26 July guardian.co.uk), 19 of the 50 athletes selected were BMW backed. Similarly, when the BBC named their ‘Top 100 Team GB Contenders for London 2012’ (26 July 2011, bbc.co.uk), 13 of the 100 considered likely members of Team GB were part of the BMW London 2012 Performance Team.

Meanwhile, many of them are recording incredible times, scores and distances. Some have even gone as far as achieving the qualifying standard for London 2012, which means they are now eligible to be selected for Team GB or ParalympicsGB.

Cooper dealerships are backing local athletes including James Foad (Rowing), Hannah Stodel (Paralympic Sailing), Savannah Marshall (Boxing), Anthony Ogogo (Boxing), John Robertson (Sailing), Amanda Coulson (Boxing), Mo Sbihi (Rowing), Ashley Jackson (Hockey), Beth Storry (Hockey) and Richard Buck (Athletics).

Divisional Franchise Director, Louis Fallenstein, commented: “The local athlete programme has provided fantastic opportunities for us and for the athletes. These talented individuals give people in the community a local focus in the run-up to the Games. They are the perfect inspiration for showing budding young athletes exactly what is possible if they work hard and make the most of their abilities. It’s great to be able to keep up to date with each athlete’s progress, knowing that everyone in the company is proud to be supporting them.”
